If you are in a hilly area, trekking in the forest, or stuck in an area where neither the internet nor the network is working, sending your location to someone may seem impossible. But actually, you can send your approximate location through SMS even without internet and GPS, if you have a basic compass app.
How to send location through compass and SMS? Follow these steps
First, open the compass app on your phone. Most smartphones (both Android and iPhone) already have the compass app. If your phone does not have it, then download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
Note the information around your location. The compass will give you information about the direction in which you are looking. Along with this, if you see any landmark nearby (such as a temple, rock, river, bridge, or building), remember its name and approximate distance.
Write this information in SMS.
Share the compass location in SMS and the landmark you saw, XYZ trekking route, 5 km away from Shimla, write this and send it. SMS is sent through the network even if the internet is down.
Use offline GPS apps.
Some apps show you GPS location even without internet (if downloaded beforehand), like Maps.me, OsmAnd, and Offline Compass. Some of these apps can show your location and you can send its details in SMS.
Keep these things in mind.
Always keep an offline compass app and an offline maps app in your phone. Before going on a journey or trekking, share the route and possible location with your family. Even if the network comes, immediately send the location through WhatsApp or live sharing.
