Beauty fans spend a lot of money on serums, creams, and LED gadgets in a bid to remove years from their appearance, and there's one particular item people can use to minimise stubborn lines on the upper lip.
Clarins' Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm is an everyday lip balm that smoothes the appearance of fine vertical lines and wrinkles (also known as perioral lines) on the lip contour area. Priced at £35 on Next, shoppers say a small amount 'goes a long way', and claim their lips 'look and feel plumper' after using the product.
Formulated with smoothing raspberry seed oil and nourishing shea butter, this balm aims to visiblyrepair, replenish, soften and moisturise chapped lips - meaning shoppers can use this product all year round.
Dr Janice Brown, an expert in aesthetic treatments, explained what causes the perioral lines (or smoker's lines): "They aren't just the result of smoking; they're part of a broader process where our skin loses elasticity over time. While smoking certainly accelerates their formation, collagen loss, sun damage, and even facial expressions play a huge role. But they're not something you have to live with forever. With the right treatments and care, you can significantly reduce the appearance of those lines."
Besides Clarins, shoppers can try The Inkey List Tripeptide Plumping Lip Balm, £8.25 at LookFantastic, to encourage a plumper and more defined-looking pout. While the peptide complex helps repair skin and improve elasticity over time, the 2% Ultra Filling Spheres of hyaluronic acid plump fine lines and lock in moisture.
The SkinCeuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair targets dry lips and the appearance of lines both on the lips and surrounding vermilion border and it's available at Face the Future for £50.
A Clarins shopper shared her thoughts after trying the Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm sample: "Ideal for a fair-haired older person of which I'm one. As I've aged, my thin lips appear to be less defined but this seems to help and I am happy with the effect so can recommend. Clarins' selection of samples get a thumbs up from me and this sample convinced me to commit to purchase."
Another wrote: "The balm doesn't feel sticky and absorbs into my lips while still giving them some shine. It took about three weeks of regular use before Isaw a reduction in my lip lines, but they felt and looked softer after only a few days."
One customer also echoed: "Love this product, I've only been using it for about two weeks and have seen a dramatic change in the small wrinkles around my top lip."
But some disliked the package design and said they found it challenging to get the balm out of the jar, as one shared: "This is beautiful when applied, but my issue with design is having to use fingers means getting it under my nails, I think I'd prefer either a stick or tube."
A shopper left a lukewarm comment, saying: "Quite a hard cream but it feels nice on my lips. Not sure if I've seen any improvement but they feel moisturised."
Others preferred to use it as nighttime treatment, with one saying: "I use this every night before I go to bed. My lips are extremely soft in the morning. They also look and feel plumper after using this product for about a week."
Shoppers can find the Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm at Next for £35.
