Up to 1.1 million pensioners are thought to be missing out on a benefit that pays up to £110.40 a week. The allowance aims to help pensioners live independently for longer if they are living with a disability or a severe health condition that requires assistance with daily tasks.
Retirees could either receive £73.90 or £110.40 more per week with Attendance Allowance, depending on the level of support they need. Plus, state pensioners could also claim more support if they are eligible for the benefit, such as extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or a reduction in their council tax, and it won't impact their State Pension payments.
It is not means-tested, but claimants must be state pension age and have needed care or support for at least six months. Those who are terminally ill are able to claim without waiting for six months.
According to the latest data, the majority of claimants in February had arthritis, followed by dementia and heart disease, reports Sky News, which notes that some 1.1 million people who may be eligible are missing out.
If you need help during both the day and at night, or a medical professional has said you're nearing the end of life, you may be eligible for £110.40 a week. Those who need help during the day or at night could receive £73.90 a week.
Even if you're not currently receiving support from a carer, but you can demonstrate a need for it, you may be eligible for the benefit.
However, it does not cover mobility needs, and you can't usually receive Attendance Allowance if you live in a care home and the council is paying for your care.
You must be in Great Britain when you claim and have been in the country for at least two of the past three years.
