UK households urged to grow 1 vegetable in September

As September kicks in, gardeners are gearing up to sow the seeds to reap the results in the form of beautiful plants and vegetables in the coming months. September is considered as the peak harvest time, however, there are still many plants and vegetables that could be grown in this month.

September is a productive month for gardeners in the UK, offering a prime opportunity to sow or plant a wide variety of vegetables and ornamental plants. Hardy annuals such as pot marigold and love-in-a-mist are particularly well-suited for this time of year. When sown in early autumn, these resilient blooms establish themselves before winter and reward gardeners with earlier flowering compared to those planted in spring.

Gardening experts from Garden Focussed revealed that this is the perfect time to grow Spinach in your little green area. According to the experts, sowing spinach in autumn results in a quick crop which extends the season considerably.

The experts explained: "The best time to sow seed for an autumn crop is in the second week of September. Seeds can be sown in pots or directly in the ground exactly as described for spring sowings above.

"You can expect to start harvesting young leaves about six weeks later. If you have a cloche then protecting the crop in November time will extend the harvesting period by two to three weeks."

Experts from Gardener's World added: "Sow hardy spinach varieties, such as 'Giant Winter' direct in shallow drills in well-prepared soil, or in pots.

Delay sowing if temperatures are still hot, as this can lead to erratic germination, but don't leave it too late as plants need to become established before winter. Keep the soil or compost moist and weed free. Cover with fleece or a low cloche from October onwards, to protect from frost.

"The spinach will enter dormancy as temperatures drop, but will regrow as soon as they increase again in spring, giving you an early harvest."
