SRINAGAR: The body of the second of two soldiers missing in Ahlan Gadol forest of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district since Oct 6 was recovered Friday, a day after the body of his colleague was found in the same area, officials said

Army authorities identified the duo as Lance Havildar Palash Ghosh and Lance Naik Sujay Ghosh. Both are believed to have died in a weather-related accident during patrol in the high-altitude, snow-swept area.

“ Chinar Corps honours the supreme sacrifice of Bravehearts Lance Havildar Palash Ghosh and Lance Naik Sujay Ghosh while conducting relentless counter terror operations in extreme weather conditions. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us,” the Srinagar-based 15 Chinar Corps posted on X.

The officials said the men likely strayed amid worsening weather in the mountains running from Anantnag to Kishtwar in Jammu region. Preliminary assessments indicated an avalanche or snowstorm as the cause. “We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and are committed to their well-being,” the Army posted.

Helicopters had been deployed to help ground teams in the search for the two soldiers. Temperatures across Kashmir valley have plunged 10°C since Monday following fresh snowfall in higher reaches.
